For those not familiar, Yotam Ottolenghi is an Israreli philosopher-turned-chef. Growing up in the Middle East with parents of German and Italian origin, Yotam was surrounded by vibrant food choices from a young age. While not vegetarian himself, his vegetarian cookbooks - with an eye and palette for aesthetics and flavors - are a global favorite. Join us for 'Cracking the Cookbook' and see for yourself!

This series is a favourite, and within it, every time we get the opportunity to cook together from a new Ottolenghi book, we are overjoyed, as Yotam's (and now, team's) recipes are a delight for the senses and taste buds, but also very fun to cook as a group. This time, Extra Good Things, book 2 of the Test Kitchen (we already cracked book 1, Shelf Love, together last year) series focused on skills and solutions, brings us a collection of fun, creative, and special "things" to use in all of our recipes: sauces, condiments, sprinkles, marinades, etc. The class recipes are selected for seasonality, of course, but also at Camila's whim and fancy. The menu includes many of Camila's favourite flavors, and while vegetable forward, it is not vegan.

MENU

Endive (or Chicory) Salad with Maple Walnuts and Tahini Parmesan dressing

Wasabi Peas with Coriander Furikake (this one unites two of the "extras" and can be used on many more veggies in other seasons)

Coconut Broth Prawns with fried Aromatics

Fragrant Coconut Rice

Equipment and Ingredient List for the class can be found here; please review before buying a ticket.

This menu contains the following common allergens: Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Dairy (only in the tahini parmesan dressing, which can easily be replaced). If you have allergies or dietary restrictions that concern your ability to cook along, please e-mail info@18reasons.org before purchasing a ticket.

Camila Loew holds a Ph.D. in Humanities and is a certified nutrition consultant. Having lived alongside the Mediterranean for almost two decades, she believes that the best cooking relies on simple recipes with outstanding ingredients. That's the Mediterranean way she conveys in her classes, along with the concept of sobremesa, which happens to be the name of the company she runs. Sobremesa is the leisurely time we spend gathered around the table. In addition to running Sobremesa Culinary Tours, through which she offers delicious cultural and culinary experiences abroad for fellow food-lovers, Camila founded and directs the Food Studies & Gastronomy program at the University of Barcelona, and teaches academically about Mediterranean food culture to American students abroad. Since 2014, Camila has been sharing her love of regional Spanish and Mediterranean cuisines at 18 Reasons. For more information visit her website www.sobremesa.life
