Nonfiction: Why Did the Chicken Cross the World?: The Epic Saga of the Bird that Powers Civilization by Andrew Lawler (December, 2014)
With guest experts Nigel and Lorraine Walker of Eatwell Farm.

Recommended by five times James Beard award winning journalist Dara Grumdahl, science writer Andrew Lawlor looks back over 10,000 years to tell us the story of how chickens evolved to suit our human needs. Farmers Nigel and Lorraine Walker, of Eatwell Farm  will join us to share what they’ve learned about chickens, after more than a decade producing pasture raised eggs and recently embarking on a new venture to pioneer the next generation of humane, sustainable poultry: a breed of chicken that can provide both meat and eggs.

Food Lit meets monthly for casual conversation around 18 Reasons’ table, usually featuring the author or other expert guest, led by our fearless moderator and coordinator Heather Knape. We talk about food, flavors, farming, politics, life in San Francisco and anything else that can fit into two hours and connect back to our book of the month.

Please bring a dish or drink to share for our potluck lunch: something that celebrates eggs or chicken. Remember, you don’t have to have finished (or even begun) the book to attend - our discussions run the gamut from sparking interest in the book’s subject to full on raging debates over writing style, flavors, the food system and other loosely related topics. If nothing else, we’re hoping to get you fired up and thinking about eating well.
