This is a live, interactive, hands-on cooking class held online via Zoom. See our event policies at the bottom of this webpage.

This year, things look a little different for everyone. In the Before Times, Fort Point and 18 Reasons would have hosted a full (unmasked!) house to celebrate the joys of pairing robust and uniquely delicious beer with a menu to match, as we did for the last four years. For the fifth iteration however, we are bringing the beer and food to you--the best version of “teach a man to fish” in our opinion! In this class, Head Brewer Mike Schnebeck will teach us through taste and touch about malted grains and how they affect flavor in the brewing process, while Chef Mike will guide students through a menu that showcases the grains themselves. Join us for an evening of sipping beers and eating delicious food from the comfort of your own kitchen! Head over to https://fortpointbeer.com/shop/18-reasons-cooking-class to sign up (more information below).

Interested in participating?

Students can purchase the ticket and cooking kit bundle, which includes a 4-pack of beers and all of the pantry ingredients minus perishables, directly from Fort Point* (details below). The kit will be delivered in time to cook along the night of the event. We consider one ticket per screen, so if there are multiple members of a household cooking together on the same screen, no need to purchase multiple bundles.

  • Step 1: Purchase the ticket and cooking kit bundle (students will need to acquire a few perishable items separately) directly from Fort Point at the following link: https://fortpointbeer.com/shop/18-reasons-cooking-class.
  • Step 2: Review ingredient and equipment list here (click to view) and acquire perishable items listed. Students will receive an email with class logistics and recipes 5-7 days prior to class.

  • Step 3: Come to class on Friday 3/19 ready to cook with, learn about, and enjoy beer!

*Registration is limited to students currently residing in California, as shipping from Fort Point is only available throughout CA. Registration will close 3 days in advance of the event to ensure that students receive their beer and ingredient box prior to class.

If you’re new to 18 Reasons Online, please read this guide: How to Take an Online Class at 18 Reasons. Five calendar days before class, 18 Reasons may decide to cancel this class if not enough tickets are sold. We will notify registrants by email about cancellations.

Born in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, Mike Weller grew up in suburbs of San Jose, where he discovered cooking as his first profession and lifetime passion. After wandering through typical teenage jobs at pizza joints and ice cream parlors, Mike’s first “restaurant” job was with Sambo’s Coffee Shops, slinging hash and cooking eggs for the bar rush and Sunday breakfast crowds.  He moved on to help open several restaurants, attend the California Culinary Academy, and study under European chefs with Michelin backgrounds. Later, Mike served as an executive chef for catering companies, wineries and country clubs.  When his son was born, Mike transitioned his career into teaching, returning to the CCA where he eventually became the Executive Chef and Director of Academics. Mike also returned to school for training in his new field, earning a Master’s Degree in Education. Having taught for Le Cordon Bleu North America in both online and brick and mortar schools, Mike is thrilled to return to teaching in a neighborhood-based community.  When he is not teaching he reaps the benefits of his backyard garden, kept in perfect order by his Master Gardener wife.

Fort Point Beer Company is an independent, San Francisco beer company made up of people who believe the simple things in life can be a whole lot better. Committed to making “good beer for everyone,” Fort Point insists on making beers that are easy to like, easy to find, and easy to pair with any occasion. Known for their distinctive can design, drinkable beer styles, and a dedication to quality, Fort Point Beer Company is quickly becoming known as the beer of San Francisco.

Mike Schnebeck is the head brewer at Fort Point Beer Company— an independent San-Francisco brewery known for making unconventional, yet easy-to-enjoy beers. Mike has been with Fort Point since its inception, and is the creative force behind the company’s most beloved recipes.  He is self-taught, influenced chiefly by trial, error, and a deep appreciation for beer.

Mike’s approach to brewing is inspired by the world around him, rather than any particular style or tradition. Raised in the mojave desert by a science teacher and music teacher, he is driven by a tenacious curiosity for what makes things tick, and a boundless enthusiasm to share his discoveries with the world. As a lifelong musician himself, he believes that great beer is all about striking a balance that tells a story— combining familiar flavors in unexpected ways that evoke memories past.

Today, Mike takes pride in mentoring a team of over 30 brewers, several of whom have already gone on to start their own ventures. When Mike isn’t at Fort Point, he finds inspiration on long distance drives (no breaks allowed) and long, steep hikes through nature (also no breaks allowed).
