We are pleased to host a new chef in our kitchen! We met Muna Anaee through the Refugee Food Festival, where she cooked pop-up dinners at Tawla and Son's Addition this past June.

Muna and her husband Talib made the tough decision to leave their home in Baghdad, Iraq due to safety concerns. They arrived in the US in March of 2013 with their two children. Back in Iraq, Muna worked as a kindergarten Arabic teacher. Here in the Bay Area, Muna has continued to pursue her passion of teaching and works in a local French day care. In addition to working with children, Muna decided to pursue a new passion: cooking.

After trying the dishes Muna prepared for her ESL class, her teacher Don encouraged Muna to seriously consider pursuing a career in the culinary arts. Since then, Muna has cooked for more ESL classes, friends, and even parties making a business out of her newest passion. She hopes to eventually open her own Iraqi restaurant in the Bay Area.

Here are a few words Muna would like to share on her refugee experience: “When we arrived we felt homesick, but now our feelings have changed. We want a place to make our family happy, a place that is not dangerous. I do hard work because when I see my kids happy and safe, that makes me happy.”
