To celebrate this holiday season with a few treats, we turn to the long standing tradition of sweets from convents and monasteries in Spain. Baking sweets has long been a way for convents and monasteries to raise funds. Because they are cloistered (i.e., secluded), the nuns sell sweets via the torno system: a turning wheel contraption where the customer can purchase without interacting with the nuns inside.Â
One of the most fascinating things about the recipes made by Spanish nuns in convents and monasteries is that they have barely changed since the Middle Ages. We’ll explore a few recipes to connect with a hidden part of Spanish society and perhaps inspire you this holiday season!Â
