Sunnydale Market by 18 Reasons & Bi-Rite Market

Fresh, Affordable Food in the Sunnydale neighborhood is Coming Soon.

A new nonprofit grocery store designed with and for the Sunnydale community.

A Market Rooted in Community

18 Reasons is partnering with Bi-Rite Market and Crankstart to open an affordable, nonprofit grocery store in the heart of Sunnydale, a community in southeast San Francisco.

Located on the ground floor of Mercy Housing California’s new Amani building at 1515 Sunnydale Avenue, Sunnydale Market will be part of a growing neighborhood campus alongside a new community hub, childcare center, and YMCA. Together, these spaces will create a vibrant center of daily life where residents can gather, connect, and access the resources they need.

Why It Matters

For local residents, Sunnydale Market will mean something simple but powerful: fresh food that’s available within just a few minutes’ walk from home.

We believe that grocery stores are more than places to shop. They are where neighbors run into each other in the produce aisle, families pick up ingredients for dinner, and a sense of community unfolds, one errand at a time.

What You'll Find

A welcoming neighborhood market with everyday essentials and culturally relevant ingredients.

  • Fresh, seasonal, and affordable produce
  • A curated selection of reasonably priced grocery staples, meats, dairy, cheese, snacks, and beverages
  • Ingredients that reflect the diverse cultures of the Sunnydale community
  • Acceptance of SNAP and WIC benefits

Affordable by Design

Sunnydale Market is built to make quality food more accessible for the immediate neighborhood.

A long-term funding commitment from Crankstart will cover core operating costs, including rent, wages, and utilities. This means groceries can be sold at wholesale cost.

For Sunnydale residents, this creates a new kind of access to a fresh, balanced selection of quality ingredients close to home and priced with affordability in mind.

Designed With Sunnydale Residents

Sunnydale residents have helped shape the market from the beginning.

Community members have provided input on:

  • Product selection
  • Store layout
  • Hiring priorities
  • Signage, branding, and design

The market will create 10+ jobs, with hiring prioritized for Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley residents. All positions will offer competitive wages and full benefits.

Powered by Partnership

Sunnydale Market is the result of an innovative partnership model that brings together expertise in food, community, and philanthropy.

18 Reasons is leading the project and will provide on-site education, making the market a place not only to shop, but to learn, cook, and build confidence in the kitchen, resulting in a welcoming neighborhood space. For nearly two decades, 18 Reasons has empowered people with the skills and creativity to cook nutritious meals at home. Through programs like Food as Medicine, Nourishing Pregnancy, and Cooking Matters, they work alongside families across the Bay Area to make good food part of everyday life.

Bi-Rite Market, one of San Francisco's most beloved grocers, will operate the store, bringing decades of experience sourcing high-quality, sustainable food from trusted local farms and makers, as well as a deep commitment to direct partnerships and equitable employment practices. Rooted in a mission of Creating Community Through Food(r), Bi-Rite has long believed that food can connect people, strengthen neighborhoods, and support a more sustainable food system.

Crankstart made this project possible through a long-term funding commitment that supports the market’s operations and ensures affordability. A San Francisco–based family foundation, Crankstart focuses on advancing equity and expanding opportunity, with investments in education, economic mobility, housing stability, and community well-being. The foundation is known for its hands-on approach, supporting solutions that create lasting impact.

Mercy Housing California is providing the space for this market. The affordable housing nonprofit develops and manages communities that offer not just housing but also access to essential services and resources, aiming to create stable, thriving neighborhoods where residents can live, connect, and access opportunities close to home.

Additional support comes from the San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, the Stupski Foundation, and the San Francisco–Marin Food Bank.

Together, these partners are building a new model for neighborhood markets—one that brings food access, education, and community connection into a single place, with affordability and equity at its core.

Part of a Bigger Vision

Sunnydale Market is part of the city’s HOPE SF revitalization effort, transforming the neighborhood with new housing, services, and community spaces.

Together with the new community hub, childcare center, and YMCA, the market will help anchor a neighborhood where residents can access food, services, and connection close to home.
