In celebration of Mardi Gras and Black History Month, join 18 Reasons Executive Director and preserving teacher extraodinaire Shakirah Simley for a taste of New Orleans culture. Red beans and rice are traditionally served on Mondays in the Crescent City, so we decided to move this month's Community Dinner to a Monday. We have invited other African-American leaders in the local food movement to share their stories as well - Anthony Lucas of the local cookie emporium Anthony's Cookies and our very own Shakirah Simley will be joining us to talk about their experiences.

We are excited to bring you this recipe for Red Beans & Rice from one of Sarah's old friends, Lolis Eric Elie, one of the creator's of HBO's "Treme" series and the author of the Treme cookbook. Sarah spent two years in antediluvian New Orleans eating plenty of red beans, which might be the perfect dish for a community dinner (though we say that every month!).
